How to Determine a Manufacture Date For A Kodak Brownie Camera
Camera Designs – Cameras before Cameras before It is one of the intriguing things about the history of photography that “cameras” existed before photography had been invented. For several centuries artists had used a portable camera obscura to help them draw scenes accurately. Light entering through the lens is reflected by an angled mirror inside the box, the mirror projected an image on the ground glass screen at the top.

Kodak’s new EasyShare System is the company’s digital equivalent to its turn-of-the-century Brownie box camera, which came with preload film and no manual controls once users shot all their film, they simply sent the boxes back to Kodak for processing and printing. While the first two Kodak EasyShare digicams, the DX and DX, are much more sophisticated than a Brownie, they do feature the same “just press the button” simplicity, with fully automatic controls and an optional docking station that takes all of the guesswork out of digital image manipulation, management, and sharing.
The Kodak Picture Software is extremely easy to use — walking you through every step of the uploading, enhancing, and emailing process — and has a more graphically intuitive interface than almost any other consumer imaging software I’ve seen. It automatically sizes the images for printing or emailing, stores copies, applies simple effects, and allows you to make image corrections, such as color, brightness, and contrast adjustments. Overall, the DX and its zoom-equipped big brother the DX are possibly the simplest, most goof-proof cameras currently available.
If you’ve already read my review of the DX, you can save yourself some reading here: Apart from the zoom lens on the , the two cameras are virtually identical.

Kodak hit the press rooms with the DC on 6th June this year , with a 3x optical zoom, 3 megapixel sensor and various manual features though not overloaded the DC marked a new design and marketing ethos for Kodak. Looking far more traditional than their previous “square front” designs, the DC has the curvy lines and cool metallic finish you’d expect of a quality product. If this is genuine not an Amazon mistake the DC would become the 3 megapixel bargain of the moment.

Kodak Serial Numbers. Making a definitive statement about serial numbers over the course of Kodak history is difficult. Most print histories of Kodak and most collectors’ Web sites omit this information. My experience collecting Kodak models manufactured from the late s to the s is the basis for the comments that follow. Only the most expensive Kodak models included body serial numbers. Of domestic fixed lens cameras I think only the Medalists included numbers stamped on the film gate.
Ektra bodies had serial numbers that matched numbers stamped on the interchangeable film backs manufactured with the bodies, because of the close tolerances required. Many of the cameras manufactured in the Nagelwerke factory, including early Retinas, had serial numbers stamped on the film gate. Kodak mounted lenses from several manufacturers through the late ’30s.
Presumably some had their own numbering scheme and others may have accommodated Kodak’s wishes in numbering. Early upscale Kodak models had numbered lenses, though I have not seen information about the numbering scheme and my personal collection of s models is not large enough to even hazard a guess about how numbering was structured. My early Anastigmat Ektars have five digit serial numbers. About , Kodak began creating alphanumeric serial numbers for most of its better lenses–Ektars and Anastigmat Specials later Anastars that identified the year of manufacture.
This was in the general form ‘LLNNN’, where the first two letters identified the year and the numbers were the serial number.

All Hasselblad cameras and film magazines, as well as some other Hasselblad items, bear a two or three letter code in front of, or incorporated into, the serial number. Two of these letters are used to encrypt the year of manufacture. The digits indicate the decennium and year in which the item was produced. Hasselblad F serial number with two letter year code “CH”, which translates to 19 This system was adopted just before the middle of the 20th century, and the assumed prefix representing the century then was “19”.
The new millenium of course changed the prefix from “19” to “20”. This method of coding does not provide a way to tell what century prefix to add. We just have to remember that it was first used in the late ‘s, and that years later than “49” upto and including “99” should be prefixed by “19”. All years earlier than “50” will need the prefix “20”. Victor Hasselblad learned about this method of coding at Eastman Kodak’s. The encircled “L” sign stands for “Lumenized”: Kodak’s way of saying the lens has a single layer antireflection coating.
For a brief period, Hasselblad appended a third letter to the two letter date code. This third letter was used to indicate the product type. A product type code reappeared in , now in the form of a two digit code preceding the two letter date code.
