She hails from a post-colonial nation and has challenged cherished mores and taboos of that nation. Her fiction confronts hot-button topics, including terrorism and abortion, and she has been both provocative and substantive on the complicated topic of sexuality. It is also worth noting that only 12 women have won the Nobel since the Swedish Academy began handing out the literary prize in The cumulative effect of this can be disorienting, but only in the most impressive way.

Moving from one story to the next, you can feel as if you are reading works by different authors. What could veer off into snide satire, however, becomes a heady meditation on identity, alienation and assimilation. What a firmament of love ours would be. The story, instead, slides inexorably toward its horrific conclusion. Sound familiar? Her career could have been spent lamenting, or flatly ignoring, Ireland. She examines it, instead, with sympathy and honor and, yes, rage, but also wit.

Because no matter who wins, no one wins. And yet as you can see from her letters, she was a born writer herself. Your source for jobs, books, retreats, and much more.

Maturin was not alone in this opinion… For centuries, Ireland has been considered rather weird, a kind of unsettling site of the bizarre, a mythic-Gothic land of fairies, ghosts and demons. Indeed, in popular culture, and particularly in Gothic literary and cinematic traditions, there circulates an almost unchanging version of Ireland as a site of queer goings on. To a global audience, Ireland is where anything can happen, and usually does, and interestingly, Irish writers have very often reflected that view back to the world.

The coming of the Celtic Tiger in the s, with its promise of a bright future in which such dark shadows had been completely banished, seemed, to some at least, to herald the end of this Gothic Irish nightmare.

(Un)gothicising Ireland: a case study of Elizabeth Griffith (1727–93)

However, other recent Irish novels have represented the trauma of sexual abuse and of institutional containment through tropes and themes proper to two traditional genres, gothic and crime fiction. The four official reports published between — when the Ryan report was made public — and with the Cloyne report, set in relief the fact that it was not just isolated individuals, but the whole of Irish society who had to suffer the devastating and long-lasting consequences of several decades of generalized child abuse or child neglect, most especially at the hand of clerical orders, with the complicity of the State.

The reports were appalling not only because of what they revealed of the nature of the crimes, but most of all because of the sheer scale on which they were committed. Artists with their heightened sensitivity were prone to perceive those effects more clearly, more acutely and more readily than politicians, journalists, critics or even sociologists.

McPolin documented a story dating back to the mids, told by an old-timer known as Blind Dan, explaining that the fairies were a group of.

Arthur Conan Doyle is often perceived as the quintessential Englishman, patriotically devoted to the Crown and the empire’s defender and apologist. But such a relegation is both limiting and simplistic.

Born in Scotland to Irish Catholic parents, Doyle’s heritage is complex. Consequently, British imperialism, Irish nationalism, and Catholic allegiance converge uneasily in his works. This book examines the resulting tensions between imperialism and colonialism in his writings. It argues that his thematic obsessions with topography, race, psyche, and sexuality stem from his ambivalence toward his own heritage. The volume repositions Doyle and redresses current critical approaches that have seen him solely as the advocate of empire and have ignored his colonial background.

It explores how his fictions occur within a colonial context, the complexity of which is evident in gothic tropes of shifting landscapes, disguised criminalities, spiritualism, and sexual anomalies and conflicts. Read more Read less. The Learning Store.
